Handling
In Cornwall England, where we live and ride the terrain is hilly. We have miles of quiet twisting lanes, consequently we have developed steering geometry that gives our bikes amazing handling at any speed. In these challenging conditions we also need to be able to climb with ease and stop without fuss so our bikes have an excellent gear range and come with Avid BB7 disc brakes as standard.

Folding / Split Down Features - B1
We wanted to incorporate the useful ability to fold the B1 to varying degrees to allow it to be transported or stored where most recumbent bikes simply couldn't fit.  The B1 can be folded quickly without tools.

The routine for full splitting and folding works as follow (though very often it is not necessary to exactly follow each if you are just fitting it into the back of a car) :-

  • Rear Carrier (optional) is removable with QR levers. (available late 08)
  • Quick release front and rear mudguards if fitted.  These clip on and off in seconds and are light weight.
  • Seat is removable with quick release levers, then fold over seat mount.
  • Remove front and rear wheels.
  • Rear frame section folds under main frame.
  • Shorten the boom.
  • Fold the handlebars down to the front forks

Once folded and split down the B1will easily fit into most standard bicycle bags.
If the rear frame section is unclamped and removed then it will fit into a standard large suitcase without the seat.

Folding / Split Down Features - B2
The B2 is a dual 26 inch wheel bike and so is not the obvious choice as a folding bike. However, it can still be made smaller for transport due to some unique features.

The routine for full splitting and folding the B2 works as follow:-

  • Quick release front and rear mudguards if fitted.  These clip on and off in seconds and are light weight.
  • Seat is removable with quick release levers.
  • Remove the QR rear wheel
  • Remove the QR front wheel
  • Shorten the boom
  • Fold the handlebars down to the front forks
  • If this is still not small enough then the B2 has the clever trick of the rear frame section being removable -
  • Unclamp the 2 x M6 main frame bolts, unhook the rear derailleur and rear brake cables and remove the rear frame section. (this is only recommended for major journeys but the B2 is unique in being a high racer style bike that can do this).

Frames
ICE bike frames are a combination of Cro Mo steel for the main tube and 7005 Aluminum Alloy for the front boom and rear section. All frames have detail braze ons for cable guides and other mounts as required. Using steel for the main tube gives a strong yet compliant ride adding to the overall comfort.
The front boom and rear section are both made from heat treated aerospace Aluminium alloy for light weight, stiffness and enhanced power transfer from the pedals to the wheels.

Seats Options and Seat Angle Adjustment
The B1 comes as standard with our tubular aluminium seat with mesh fabric cover giving excellent comfort and ventilation. The fabric is laced onto the aluminium seat frame with adjustable straps. The seat is clamped onto the main frame with QR levers and can be removed easily and quickly without tools for transport. The seat angle is quickly adjustable to 5 settings and can be done at the road side in seconds if desired.

The B2 comes as standard with a composite hard shell seat which has a luxurious breathable Ventisit comfort cover as standard and the package is available in a Medium or Large size. The hard shell seat makes it easy to get your feet on the ground with the higher seating position of the dual 26" B2.

The hard shell seat is also available as an optional upgrade on the B1, generally for the more sporty rider.

Rear Suspension - B1 only
Standard on the ICE B1 in heat treated Aluminium the rear suspension gives a superbly comfortable ride by smoothing out any bumps coming up from the rear wheel.
The suspension pivot also has the double function of allowing the simple folding of the swing arm.

Elastomer Springing and Damping - B1
The B1 uses the same well proven suspension system as the Trice Q or T but re-tuned for use on the bike. The benefits of an elastomer over an air shock are:

  • Elastomers are lighter in weight than an air shock, as well as resulting in a more compact installation.
  • Elastomeric materials provide a natural damping that is ideal for suspension.  There is also no initial stiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stiction) to overcome (often found with more complicated gas or oil damped units., resulting in a more responsive suspension over coarse road surfaces and small bumps.
  • Elastomers are zero-maintenance, with no seals to maintain or air pressures to check.
  • Using a combination of 2 different compounds and 5 different mounting positions, the suspension can be easily and quickly tuned to accommodate a wide range of body weight, rack loads, and rider’s preference.  The suspension can be adjusted on the road by the rider without the use of tools.

The B1 is shipped with the standard RED elastomer, harder GREEN elastomers are available to order if you are heavier.

If you are setting your bike up with a heavy touring load then we recommend adjusting your suspension correspondingly to get the best results.

Steering Stem
ICE bikes come with a custom highly adjustable light weight handle bar stem which can be set for height and stop angle. Through careful design we have made it reversible to allow simple switching of optional straight or wrap around handlebar styles.
Even the cable lengths remain the same when changing between bar styles!
The stem tilts forward for easy access with an adjustable stop system and simple adjustable friction damping to control pivot stiffness.
Careful cable routing and pivot design allow the stem to be folded right down beside the front forks when the B1 or B2 are folded for transport.

Handlebar Options
Two types of handlebars are available for the B1 and B2 allowing customization to your preferred arm position.
As standard the the bikes come with straight bars giving good clearance to your knees and lower legs in tight maneuvers and a relaxed arm position. These bars also result in a slightly more compact fold.

Alternatively we offer wrap around bars as an optional extra which tend to restrict leg movement in slow very tight turning but give a more straight arm position and a speedy look and feel. Bars can initially be changed from one type to the other without changing cable lengths so experimentation to determine your personal preference only requires 1 extra set of bars. In most cases a test ride with us or at your dealer will quickly confirm your favorite setup.

Under seat steering is not offered on the ICE bike range.

Length Adjustment
The front boom is adjustable for a wide range of leg lengths (see Rider Size for details). The boom is clamped with two Stainless Steel bolts and also has the option of changing to a set of QR levers which give tool-less adjustment of the boom. This can be particularly useful for transporting as the boom can be quickly slid into the main frame reducing the overall length of the package.
The front derailleur cable is routed through a guide up to the front derailleur so no clamping or re-adjustment of the changer cable is needed if the boom is moved.
An adjustable boom avoids compromising the weight distribution between the front and rear wheels of sliding seat designs.

Space For Big Tyres
The B1 can take massively large tyres such as the 2.25" (60mm) Schwalbe Big Apples thanks to the wide front fork clearance and the specially designed rear frame.
Our custom rear wheel ensures that the chain does not rub on large tyres in the 1st gear position as it would on other bikes without a very compromised chain line.
Please note that the B1 mudguards will only work up to 50mm wide tyres.

The B1 has 20 inch (406) wheels front and rear and the B2 has 26" wheels.
The B2 can take 50mm wide tyres.

There is a very large choice of tyres available in these sizes, from small high-pressure racing tyres, to large comfortable balloon tyres available from all major tyre manufacturers.

The B1 and B2 are fitted with Marathon Racer tyres as standard Schwalbe tyres. These have proved to be very durable and reliable. We use inner tubes with Schrader (car type) valves.
ICE always has good stocks of Schwalbe tyres and tubes and we can ship them anywhere in the world. The mudguards (fenders) are designed to work with up to 50mm tyres.

Compact Drive System - B1 only
The ICE B1 uses our unique rear hub and custom 9-32 rear cassette which gives a very practical gear range with the 20" wheel. We then use a road compact front chain set keeping the whole package small and neat with excellent shifting and light weight efficient all derailleur gears.
For more information please click here

Custom Hubs
The B1 uses our top quality custom rear disc hub designed for use with our special 9-32 wide range cassette. This hub has 4 simple sealed cartridge bearings and can be dismantled easily if maintenance should be required.

The B1 and B2 use a high quality front hub which matches the rear, again with sealed cartridge bearings. The light weight package is completed with hollow steel QR skewers.

Avid Disc Brakes
The ICE B1 and B2 come with the excellent Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes front and rear as standard. We experimented with rim brakes on our early prototype bikes but quickly found them to be insufficient in our harsh Cornish riding conditions. Wet weather and heavy braking on down hill stops soon showed that using the rim surface was too unpredictable for confident and safe riding. The SRAM BB7s are well respected and spares are easy to source. They are also simple to adjust for pad wear without the use of tools and maintenance of the cable operation is simple.

Replaceable Rear Derailleur Hanger
If you should manage to damage the derailleur mounting then this item is easily replaced on the B1 and the B2.

Rear Dynamo Mount
On the B1 a mounting point for a conventional bottle dynamo is included under the left side rear swing arm. (use conventional left hand dynamo).
On B2 26" model a dynamo bracket is included on the left side above the seat stay and this requires a "Right Hand" dynamo.
